Observation Narrative
Small stand of very open forest on the convex nose of a steep slope by Bull Run. The mapped substrate is Triassic sandstone, but both rocks and soil at the site suggest that Ball's Bluff siltstone (or an equivalent) is the actual substrate. Calcium levels in soil samples are actually higher than those in soils collected from plot FAIR041 on mafic substrates nearby. With some conspicuous differences, e.g. the understory dominance of Ostrya virginiana, the vegetation also appears to be very similar at the two sites.
